Game Review: Apex Legends (From a Player with 868 Hours of Playtime)

Apex Legends: FPS to The Max

Hello, everyone! I'm Dion. Welcome to my website, feel free to make yourself at home.

I am going to review the FPS battle royale game from Respawn Entertainment, Apex Legends! I've been playing this game since late 2021 and have logged more than 800 hours on my Steam account. So, let's get started!

Goal of the Game

Like other battle royale games, each match starts with 20 squads of three players, for a total of 60 players in the lobby. Your only goal is to survive the ring zone, defeat the other teams, and become the Champion.

In Apex Legends, your armor depends on your EVO points. You start the game with 0 EVO points and a white armor that provides 50 shields. You can earn points by dealing damage to enemies, interacting with beacons, looking at the care packages, and collecting EVO caches. Once you get 450 points, you will level  up to blue armor, gaining an additional 25 shields. To reach the next level, purple armor, you need to gain 1,625 points.

Each character also has unique perks that you unlock when you reach the blue and purple armor levels. These upgrades correlate with the characters' unique skills and passive abilities.

To play ranked games, you must reach level 20. This is a common requirement in competitive games to prevent smurfing. But, you don't need to worry because Apex has 'mixed tape' games, which include modes like Control (similar to 'Capture the Flag'), Gun Run (weapon changes every time you kill opponent), and Team Deathmatch. These modes let you get used to the fighting mechanics rather than just doing a 'looting simulator'.

Rank Tier: Apex Predator (red) and Apex Master (purple)

As a disclaimer, I tend to spend a lot of time in the Firing Range instead of in actual ranked games. My favorite character is Wraith (with Wingman and VK-47 Flatline).

Pros (+)

  • If you buy one battle pass and completed it, you technically get an infinite battle pass for your entire Apex Legends career (you buy the pass for 950 Apex Coins. By the end of the pass, you get a total of 1,300 Apex Coins).
  • The game's physics are a lot of fun and you can use all sorts of unexpected movement techniques to catch your enemies off guard.

Cons (–)

  • In-game cosmetics are really expensive.
  • The matchmaking system is frustrating. You often get matched with people who have a much higher rank or skill level, so be prepared.
  • The EA servers can be unreliable. They used to have dedicated servers for big cities like Jakarta, Tokyo, and Frankfurt, but now they are only separated by continent (e.g., Southeast Asia, East Asia, and America).

My Rating: 6/10

I would recommend it to FPS lovers, especially those who enjoy battle royale games, because of its interesting physics and character abilities.

I would not recommend it to people who experience motion sickness or fatigue, because Apex is a very fast-pace game.

Congratulations, you are the chosen ones who made it to the end of this blog.

Comments

  1. I also played it a lot Deon, and playing against pro players is really frustrating sometimes. Keep grinding!

  2. I have played Apex before, and your description of it is very accurate. I feel like match making issues in battle royal games are very common, and I agree that it is frustrating. I think your rating is fair for what the game offers.
